True. I read something a month or two back that only about 1/3 of the blacks in the South were slaves.
I also was doing a search of my family history. My original Irish ancestors came from Ireland in 1747 and settled in North Carolina. After the Civil War they lost their land apparently and migrated to Arkansas. My native American ancestors came on the Trail of Tears but all brought their one or two slaves with them as Freemen and stayed together as an extended family unit where a second generation was born of the freemen yet the kids worked the farm like any family would which I found surprising, but it sort of makes sense. Life was tough then, all were poor as dirt and they stayed together to endure the rough times. Our heritage is thicker than we imagine.
I do get a kick out these white purity folks. In America a pure anything is a rarity. We are the mongrels of the world !! Personally I'm kind of proud of that.

What history doesn't teach us is that many Blacks fought on the side of the Confederacy.
